An industry insider revealed today that Tencent (0700.HK) plans to hold a press conference in Shanghai to announce its licensing of an as-yet unknown first-person shooter (FPS) from a well-known international FPS franchise. Tencent reportedly hopes the new game can help it extend the dominance of the Chinese FPS market which it currently enjoys with licensed FPS CrossFire.
Tencent currently offers five FPS titles: Warface, CrossFire, A.V.A. (Alliance of Valiant Arms), War of Zombie, and Battery - all, with the exception of the Crytek-developed Warface, licensed from South Korean companies. The two North American and European-developed FPS titles best known to Chinese gamers are Battlefield and Call of Duty. An online version of the former, Battlefield Online, is currently operated by Changyou (Nasdaq: CYOU), a subsidiary of Internet portal Sohu (Nasdaq: SOHU), and industry rumor has it that Tencent will announce that it has licensed the rights to Call of Duty: Elite.
