Apple Taps AutoNavi for China Mobile Map Content
Cnr, 6/18/12
Chinese digital map provider AutoNavi (Nasdaq: AMAP) has been selected as Apple's mainland China mapping partner for iOS 6, with AutoNavi's logo appearing in the lower right-hand corner of maps of China in Apple's new self-developed mobile mapping application. Because maps are a matter of national security, overseas firms seeking to offer domestic mapping services must operate China-based servers, pass review by China's National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation, and obtain relevant online licenses, as well as cooperate with local map providers. In Q1 2012, AutoNavi, NavInfo (002405.SZ), and Shenzhen Careland Computing Systems were China's top three domestic map content providers, with 45%, 43.2%, and 6% of the mobile mapping market respectively. AutoNavi also led in terms of market share in China's mobile mapping client market, with 26.3%, followed by Google (23.2%) and Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) (13.6%).
