Netease Launches URL-Shortening Service

Sohu IT, 6/05/12

Chinese internet company Netease (Nasdaq: NTES) launched a URL-shortening service, 126.am, today, offering service similar to the Twitter-oriented URL shortener Bit.ly.

A source said Netease had not developed the service for its own microblogging platform, but would not rule out the possibility of using it in its own platform (http://t.163.com) in the future.

126.am allows users to collect click data on each shortened URL, such that they can track PV and UV data, and to view user visit data by time period, region, and referrer. Logged-in users can also use the service to create custom shortcode URLs, and to add notes to URLs.

Netease has opened API access to the new service.
