MIIT Announces April 2012 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its April 2012 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom operating revenues were RMB 95.09 bln (USD 15.12 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to RMB 379.12 bln (USD 60.27 bln), up 13.6% over the same 4-month period of 2011. Core services accounted for RMB 339.05 bln (USD 53.90 bln) of the cumulative total, up 10.1% YoY. Year-to-date capital expenditure came to RMB 66.01 bln (USD 10.49 bln), a 10.6% year-on-year increase.
Total telephone subscribers saw a net increase of 10.95 mln in April to reach 1.314 bln. Mobile subscribers grew by 11.23 mln to 1.030 bln, and fixed-line subscribers dropped by 279,000 to 283.76 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed-line and PHS, the PHS subscriber base declined by 425,000 subs to 15.36 mln, while traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscribers increased by 146,000 to 268.40 mln. 6.91 mln new 3G subscribers were added in April to reach a total of 158.97 mln.
A total of 70.78 bln SMS messages were sent during the month of April, bringing the total for the first 4 months of 2012 to 301.83 bln, a 6.0% increase over the figure during the same period of 2011.
Broadband added 1.76 mln new registered users in April to reach a total of 159.31 mln. Dial-up decreased by 22,000 users, lowering the total dial-up user base to 5.62 mln.
