Rumor: China Unveils Electrical Appliance Recycling Policy

Ce.cn, 5/18/12

Yesterday, an industry source gave a copy of the Management Methods for Administering the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Processing Fund to a reporter for the National Business Daily. The Methods state clearly that electrical and electronic appliance manufacturers and importers and import agents of electrical and electronic appliances will be required to pay into the fund. The term "manufacturers" will be taken to include both contract manufacturers and companies manufacturing devices under their own brands. The first batch of appliances to be covered by requirements that companies pay into the recycling fund will include televisions, microcomputers, refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners. The Methods will take effect July 1, 2012.

Subsidy standards for companies recycling old appliances will be: RMB 85/unit for televisions, RMb 85/unit for microcomputers, RMB 80/unit for refrigerators, RMB 35/unit for washing machines, and RMB 35/unit for air conditioners.
