Update: Voole Adds Billing System to Internet TV Platform
CCID, 5/18/12
Chinese video-on-demand website Voole announced yesterday that it had launched the new version of its internet TV platform, adding a billing system among other features. Industry insiders believe the move to signal an upcoming move towards a business model based on charging users for internet TV. With the addition of the billing system, some of the HD films available on the platform have been marked to indicate the price for viewing. Voole says, however, that while the upgraded platform features a billing system, the system has not yet been activated, and that even films marked as costing money will initially still be available for free viewing. "Voole has no doubts about the viability of fee-based business models," CEO Shao Yiding said. "We also firmly believe that users can grow accustomed to paying for television programming. As long as our users feel that they are getting their money's worth, we are confident that they will pay for services of outstanding quality."
