Netease Upgrades Youdao Search Engine
Netease Tech, 5/17/12
Chinese Internet firm Netease (Nasdaq: NTES) launched a redesigned version of its Youdao search engine today. The homepage and search results pages have been redesigned to enlarge the search field and emphasize additional search features and functionality.
Youdao has also optimized its search suggestion feature. When users search for certain types of content, Youdao's "Suggest" feature will display a list of potential answers beneath the search field. A search for "Beijing weather," for instance, will cause a menu to appear underneath the search field displaying the weather forecast for the next two days. The feature also offers navigation functionality for major websites, popular films and television shows, and other categories of search results.
Youdao also collects favorite websites within certain categories, so that when users search for related content, the search engine will intelligently recognize the nature of the user's search request and recommend related content in the same category - an aspect of the new version of Youdao's precision search feature.
For instance, a search for the TV series "The Big Bang Theory" will filter results into "online viewing" and "downloads" categories, allowing users to select what kind of results they want to see. Users can also add "hashtags" to their searches - for example inputting "The Big Bang Theory #download" - to limit results to downloads.
Youdao's precision search feature currently covers several dozen categories of searches, including television series, e-books, travel, and MP3 downloads, and will continue to expand to more categories.
