MIIT Announces March 2012 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its March 2012 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom operating revenues were RMB 101.25 bln (USD 16.07 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to RMB 284.03 bln (USD 45.08 bln), up 14.9% over the same 3-month period of 2011. Core services accounted for RMB 250.55 bln (USD 39.77 bln) of the cumulative total, up 10.2% YoY. Year-to-date capital expenditure came to RMB 51.284 bln (USD 8.145 bln), a 12.1% year-on-year increase.
Total telephone subscribers saw a net increase of 11.65 mln in March to reach 1.303 bln. Mobile subscribers grew by 11.9 mln to 1.019 bln, and fixed-line subscribers dropped by 250,000 to 284.04 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed-line and PHS, the PHS subscriber base declined by 558,000 subs to 15.78 mln, while traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscribers increased by 308,000 to 268.25 mln. 8.14 mln new 3G subscribers were added in March to reach a total of 152.06 mln.
A total of 74.45 bln SMS messages were sent during the month of March, bringing the total for the first 3 months of 2012 to 231.05 bln, a 6.9% increase over the figure from the same period of 2011.
Broadband added 2.59 mln new registered users in March to reach a total of 157.55 mln. Dial-up increased by 132,000 users, raising the total dial-up user base to 5.65 mln.
