China's 2011 Smart Terminal Shipments Reach 118 Mln Units
MIIT, 4/13/12
According to the White Paper on Mobile Terminals released recently by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's (MIIT) China Academy of Telecommunication Research (CATR), almost 118 mln smart terminals were shipped in China in 2011, more than the total number of smart terminals shipped in all previous years. A total of 450 mln mobile terminals were shipped in 2011, up 16.8% over 2010. The volume of smart terminals shipped increased by 175% over 2010, growing from less 5% of all mobile terminals in 2006 to 25.9%.
More than 70% of the marketshare for mobile terminals shipped in 2011 belonged to domestic vendors, who have become the key force driving the domestic market. There are many players in the relatively fragmented Chinese mobile terminals market, in which 19 companies have more than 1% marketshare, but only four have more than 5% of the market (with 13.26%, 8.71%, 5.56%, and 6.09%, respectively), comprising 34% of the total market.
Chinese contract manufacturers for mobile terminals produced 1.13 bln units in 2011, or roughly 70% of all units produced worldwide. However, many foreign enterprises build Chinese plants for relatively simple assembly - including Nokia and Samsung's China plants, as well as dedicated contract manufacturers like Foxconn (2038.HK; 2354.TW) and Flextronics - and terminals assembled at these plants account for a large proportion of domestic production of mobile terminals.
In Q4 2011, smart terminals accounted for 36.17% of the total number of mobile terminals shipped nationwide. Devices running the Android, iOS, and Symbian operating systems accounted for 73.99%, 10.67%, and 12.53% of smart terminals, respectively.
Mobile Terminals: "Mobile terminals" refers to mobile communications terminals: "mobility" is assessed based mainly on the devices' mobile communications capabilities and the ease of transport afforded by the device's form factors. This category includes mobile phones and tablet computers.
Shipping volume: For purposes of this White Paper, "shipping volume" is the total number of mobile terminals certified for network access in the Chinese market, and is based on actual figures for terminals sold in bulk to retailers by any terminal manufacturer (Chinese or foreign) on the Chinese market through regular channels and subsequently going on the sales market. This differs from the rough figures reported by private media based on reports from retail channels or online surveys. "Shipping volume" includes both actual sales and unsold inventory; because of this, the figure is generally slightly higher than total sales volume.
Contract manufacturing volume: "Contract manufacturing" refers to cases in which an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) will produce a handset to be labeled with the brand of another company, and covers manufacturers, service providers, and suppliers of this nature. For purposes of this White Paper, discussion of contract manufacturing volume for mobile terminals refers to the total number of terminals produced in China by domestic or foreign manufacturers, regardless of whether or not the terminals will be sold on the Chinese market (or will complete the attendant network access certification process).
