China Sees RMB 1 Bln in 2011 Documentary Film Revenues

The Documentary Center at Beijing Normal University's film department released its "2011 Research Report on the Development of Chinese Documentary Films" on March 31, in which it found total investment of roughly RMB 800 mln and total revenues of more than RMB 1 bln for China's documentary market, as well as total viewing time of roughly 58,000 hours for the year. 48% of the Chinese documentary market in 2011 went to domestically produced documentaries; 15% to adaptations of foreign documentaries, and 37% to foreign-produced documentaries. There were 83 television programs and eight television channels focused on documentaries. In 2011, a total of 26 documentary films were licensed by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) for public screenings, up from 19 in 2009 and 16 in 2010.
