DoNews, 3/31/12
From March 31 at 8am, to April 3 at 8am, Chinese internet companies Sina (Nasdaq: SINA) and Tencent (0700.HK) microblogging services will suspend users' ability to comment.
Sina and Tencent released an announcement stating that due to the large amount of harmful rumors and illegal information circulating on their respective microblogging platforms, both companies will be "cleaning" their services.
Prior to the announcement, Xinhua News Agency recently stated on its website, xinhuanet.com, that a number of criminals have been fabricating lies without reason on the Internet, spreading malicious disinformation regarding "military vehicles entering Beijing." A few websites with "poor management" have resulted in the spread of online rumors, in violation of state laws and regulations, which has caused adverse social effects. The State Internet Information Office (SIIO) has instructed local network management departments to punish offenders; The Telecom Management Department has closed 16 websites.
