China Telecom Tests Cloud Storage Service
CCTIME, 3/13/12
China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) recently began closed beta testing of its "E-Surfing Cloud Storage" service, which offers users a free 189 GB of cloud storage. The beta is only open to users with one of the 10,000 invitation codes sent out by the operator. Last year, China Telecom said that it would launch a series of E-Surfing cloud computing products, including cloud servers and cloud storage, in 2012.
The E-Surfing Cloud Storage service currently offers access through a web interface, a PC client, and applications for Android and iOS devices. The service supports uploads of files up to 2 GB in size, which will be accessible through the web or smartphone clients. Users can automatically synchronize all filesystem actions, including creating, deleting, copying, and pasting new files, between the cloud storage and their local storage systems, allowing easy synchronization of files across multiple platforms and devices.
A number of similar services are already available in China, including internet company Sina's (Nasdaq: SINA) VDisk and online storage offerings from P2P video and download acceleration service operator Xunlei and online media and game operator Shanda Interactive. In its "China Cloud Storage Services Report," released in 2011, IT market research firm Springboard Research predicted that the Chinese cloud storage service market would show annual compound growth of up to 103% over the next five years.
