2011 China Bi-directional TV User Base Reaches 8.8 Mln

On March 1, Beijing-based TV industry consulting firm CMR-Union released its predictions for the development of the Chinese bi-directional and interactive cable upgrade market in 2012. As of the end of December 2011, bi-directional digital cable coverage had expanded to 76.5 mln Chinese households, with 8.83 mln actual subscribers to bi-directional digital cable. CMR-Union drew its figures from a study of 200 cable operators across the country.
According to the report, 69% of operators developed bi-directional interactive television services in 2011. Regarding value-added services, the study found that as of the end of 2011, 92.1% of all Chinese cable operators had developed internet services. 49.6% of operators had developed VOD services; 29.7% had developed stock trading services; 21.3% had developed television-based utility bill payment services; 11.5% had developed news update services; 9.5% had developed remote education services, 10.8% had developed interactive gaming services; and 8.9% had developed television shopping services.
The report valued the Chinese market for bi-directional interactive digital cable equipment at RMB 42.1 bln in 2011, and predicted that it would grow to RMB 48.3 bln in 2012, RMB 61.2 bln in 2013, RMB 69.6 bln in 2014, and RMB 74.8 bln in 2015.
