Chongqing Unicom to Double Broadband Speeds
Chongqing Times, 3/08/12
On March 7, Chongqing Unicom VP Guo Jun announced that the operator would upgrade broadband speeds to offer twice the bandwidth of existing plans at no additional cost. Existing 2 Mbps connections, for instance, will be upgraded to 4 Mbps. Chongqing subscribers will have to download Chongqing Unicom's post-paid broadband software client to complete the upgrade, which will apply to their broadband connections until the end of the year. Meng Yongtao, VP of the Chongqing subsidiary of China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH), said that 4 Mbps or faster connections - meaning connections that will be 8 Mbps or faster following the upgrade - currently account for 97% of the operator's broadband connections. By the end of 2014 or the start of 2015, Chongqing Unicom will have upgraded its broadband connections to the 20 Mbps required by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Chongqing's largest broadband ISP, Chongqing Telecom, began offering free bandwidth upgrades tied to its mobile phone services in November 2011. A spokesperson for Chongqing Telecom said that the operator was currently researching plans for future broadband upgrades.
MIIT minister Miao Wei previously revealed that the Chinese government had set a goal of upgrading home broadband connections to 20 Mbps for urban homes and 4 Mbps connections for rural homes by the end of 2015.
