Sohu IT, 2/28/12
Wang Xiaojie, director of the Chinese State Administration of Radio, Film and Television's (SARFT) Department of Science and Technology, said recently that the central government will appropriate RMB 1.5 bln for the support of nationwide "Huhutong" rural direct-broadcast satellite (DBS) connectivity efforts in 2012. RMB 100 mln of this will be used to continue last year's Huhutong trials in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The remaining RMB 1.4 bln will fund Huhutong trials in Inner Mongolia, Guizhou, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Gansu, and Qinghai, where Huhutong trials in all six provinces and regions are guaranteed to meet trial goals by December 31, 2012. 14 mln set-top boxes will be covered by government subsidies in these areas this year, Wang said. Each STB will be subject to an RMB 100 subsidy from the central government and an additional RMB 100 subsidy from the local government, with the remainder of the cost to be borne by the end-user.
