Lenovo Drops Netbooks from Online Store

Sohu IT, 2/28/12

Chinese laptop, PC, and handset manufacturer Lenovo (0992.HK) announced recently that it had stopped selling netbooks through its online store, and had not yet reached a decision on whether or not it would resume netbook sales in the future. Ray Gorman, a spokesperson for the company, said via e-mail that the company had sold out of stocks of its existing netbook models, and would not release any new models in the near future - but did not reveal whether or not Lenovo would continue to sell netbooks through retail channels in the future.

Industry insiders say that Lenovo's change of strategy is an indicator that consumers have abandoned netbooks in favor of tablet PCs and low-cost notebooks. Dell has also stopped selling netbooks, and HP and Taiwanese computer manufacturer Acer (2353.TW) have decreased the number of netbook models on offer.
