Taobao to Require Real Name Merchant Verification

Legal Evening News, 2/24/12

Hangzhou-based B2C and C2C e-commerce site Taobao.com has announced that new and existing merchants will be required to verify their real name credentials by June 30, 2012. Merchants who do not register before the deadline will have products removed from their shelves or their stores shut down.

The new regulations require that individuals registering a new store must submit both a scan of their national ID card photo and a separate profile photo for verification.

A Taobao customer service representative said that existing real name registration information cannot be modified, which many merchants, including a number with crown-level trust ratings, said poses a serious problem as the original registrants have left their business, threatening them with possible shutdown and the loss of high ratings earned over a long period of time. The Taobao representative said their best option is to find the original registrants.
