Rumor: China Mobile, CBC to Continue CMMB Cooperation
Netease Tech, 2/07/12
An industry source revealed today that China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has plans to purchase shares in mobile phone TV operator China Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), and to continue working with CBC in its China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting (CMMB) operations. The partnership between the two companies began in March 2009 with the signing of a three-year agreement which until now has prevented CBC from partnering with China Mobile's two main competitors, China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) and China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH), to launch their own operator-customized, CMMB-enabled 3G handsets. That agreement is set to expire this year.
CMMB broadcast nodes currently provide 98.22% signal coverage in urban areas across China. With support for more than 1,000 different terminals, CMMB service now reaches more than 35 mln terminal users, 16 mln of whom are paid users.
