Beijing to Test Elevator M2M Project
CCID, 2/07/12
The Beijing municipal government announced yesterday that M2M trials will be conducted this year in 2,000 elevators located in residential buildings, shopping centers and office buildings throughout the city's Dongcheng district, followed by inspections set for October 2012. Each elevator involved in the trials will be installed with a sensor device and internet connection and will be made accessible by mobile phone. Sensors will operate around the clock, monitoring and collecting information on each elevator, and be capable of responding in real time to elevator malfunctions or failure, able also to issue emergency warnings and trigger alarms. If trials return positive results, the elevator M2M project will be expanded to approximately 130,000 elevators in Beijing.
Beijing will also use M2M technology to build a food security information tracking platform. Using milk formula as an example, the system will allow Beijing residents to enter a product-specific code into the online platform, granting immediate access to information such as the origin of the milk contained in the product, the types of feed or medicine given to the cows which produced the milk, associated inspection and quarantine information, the location where the milk was processed, the names of dairy product manufacturers involved, and shipment routes used. A spokesperson from the Beijing Food Safety Administration said that issues related to the project are still being researched but that a plan could be formulated as early as this month.
