MIIT Announces December 2011 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its December 2011 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom operating revenues were RMB 96.81 bln (USD 15.27 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to RMB 1.078 trln (USD 170 bln), up 12.8% over 2010. Core services accounted for RMB 987.98 bln (USD 155.83 bln) of the cumulative total, up 10% YoY. Year-to-date capital expenditure came to RMB 333.14 bln (USD 52.55 bln), a 4.2% year-on-year increase.
Total telephone subscribers saw a net increase of 9.62 mln in December to reach 1.271 bln. Mobile subscribers grew by 10.92 mln to 986.25 mln, and fixed-line subscribers dropped by 1.3 mln to 285.12 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed-line and PHS, the PHS subscriber base declined by 703,000 subs to 17.87 mln, while traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscribers decreased by 597,000 to 267.25 mln. 9.69 mln new 3G subscribers were added in December to reach a total of 128.42 mln.
A total of 78.46 bln SMS messages were sent during the month of December, bringing the total for 2011 to 878.76 bln, a 6.5% increase over the figure for 2010.
Broadband added 1.39 mln new registered users in December to reach a total of 156.49 mln. Dial-up decreased by 96,000 users, lowering the total dial-up user base to 5.51 mln.
