Rumor: Sina to Launch Smartphone in 2012
DoNews, 1/17/12
Chinese internet company Sina (Nasdaq: SINA) has plans to release an Android smartphone in 2012 that integrates Sina Weibo's microblogging mobile application, according to an industry source. Sina has already established a development team working independently of the Weibo department. A prototype has already been designed, and a budget plan has been submitted and awaits approval by the board of directors. The team consists of approximately ten employees, but, if approved by the board, would be established as a department and could grow to hundreds of people.
According to a source in the handset chip manufacturing industry, the Sina smartphone will use a Qualcomm chipset and a customized version of Android to allow one-click access to Sina Weibo and other applications. The source said that because the project is only in the prototype stage, many details are not yet available.
Sina's PR department declined to comment on the rumors.
