China Updates Plan for National Cable Operator
Economic Observer, 1/16/12
An industry source recently reported fresh changes to plans for a consolidated national cable TV operator, saying that the previously submitted "corporate transition" plan, which called for networks to be integrated before establishing an operator corporation, had been rejected. The new plan will call for provincial operators to report their assets before acquiring shares of a new operator corporation proportional to their asset holdings, ultimately comprising a national cable operator - meaning that a new joint-stock company will be established prior to the integration of provincial networks.
The new operator could be established this September, creating China's fourth operator of telecommunications services, including broadband access, in addition to China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH), China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK), and China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK).
