Dell today launched the Streak Pro D43 handset, the first smartphone based on Chinese internet giant Baidu's (Nasdaq: BIDU) self-developed mobile OS, Baidu Yi. The operator-customized WCDMA handset features built-in China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) services and is aimed at enterprise users as well as SNS and entertainment users.
The handset contains a Qualcomm MSM 8260 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, and a 4.3-inch qHD (960×540) Super AMOLED display. It also has an 8MP rear camera capable of capturing 1080p HD video and a 1.3MP front facing camera equipped with photo filters and video chat capability.
Besides the Baidu Yi mobile OS platform, the handset comes with Baidu Maps, search, mobile browser and address book mobile applications pre-installed, as well as 100 GB in free cloud-based server space.
Dell will handle manufacturing and sales of the handset, while Baidu will be responsible for customizing applications and software for the phone. Each company will receive a share of revenue generated by Baidu search and other services.
Baidu VP of technology, Wang Jin, has revealed plans for the company's cloud-based open platform, namely that users will soon no longer have to download or install the platform's mobile application, as applications and services offered through the platform will soon be made accessible through any terminal.
