Sina Weibo Launches Voluntary Real Name System
Beijing News, 12/01/11
Chinese internet giant Sina's (Nasdaq: SINA) Weibo microblogging platform recently launched a voluntary real name system that allows users to confirm their identity by providing personal details such as their national ID card number, legal name, and mobile phone number to obtain a unique ID number in order to protect against identity fraud.
Users who participate receive a "Shenfentong" badge on their profile page. Sina's next step will be to improve measures to protect users from personal attacks.
Over 300,000 celebrity and institutional accounts on Sina Weibo have registered verified accounts that display the "V" badge, and over 1.2 mln ordinary users have registered to receive the star-shaped "Daren" verified account badge.
Sina says that 50% of Weibo users have synced their account to a mobile phone.
