Beijing to Embed Traffic Sensors in City Streets

Legal Daily, 10/31/11

The Beijing Municipal Government has announced plans to lay traffic monitoring sensors along streets throughout the city to provide real-time SMS updates of citywide road conditions. Trials of a service which will eventually be expanded citywide are now underway in Beijing's Xicheng district to monitor the number of empty parking spots, information which is then sent by SMS to handsets of car owners in the surrounding area.

After measuring traffic density in a particular area, information returned by roadside sensors will then be used to better operate traffic signals on nearby roads and relieve traffic congestion. Future plans include connection of in-vehicle terminals to Beijing's traffic monitoring network, enabling vehicles to advise drivers on alternate routes which will further reduce traffic congestion in the city.
