Zhu Mingming, global supply chain director for Lenovo (0992.HK), announced today that the Chinese laptop, PC, and handset manufacturer's West China production base, integrating manufacturing, R&D, and sales operations, is slated to begin operations in Chengdu on December 19. Once operational, the base will have a near-term target production capacity of 2 mln to 3 mln computers per year.
Zhu said that Lenovo predicted sales of more than 40 mln computers around the world this year.
According to Zhu, the West China production base coves more than 100,000 square meters of floor space and has a designed capacity of 10 mln computers per year. In its first stage of operations, the base will produce traditional and all-in-one desktop computers, and will gradually expand to cover notebook, server, and mobile internet product manufacturing as well.
Lenovo has determined that the Chengdu R&D center, which will house nearly 1,000 employees, will serve as one of the company's key global mobile internet R&D centers in the future.
