Qihoo: Virus Infected Handsets Reach 13 Mln in H1 2011

In its "Report on Chinese Mobile Handset Security: H1 2011," released today, Chinese online security and anti-virus company Qihoo 360 (NYSE: QIHU) said that between January and June of this year, a total of 2,559 new Trojans and malware applications targeting mobile handsets were discovered. The number of infected handsets reached 13.24 mln, with Android and Symbian platforms most heavily targeted. The majority of mobile Trojans either surreptitiously incur data fees without user consent or steal private information.
The first half of this year saw explosive growth in the number of Android Trojans: after finding 12 Android Trojans in all of 2010, Qihoo 360's mobile security center found 960 between January and June of this year, affecting 1.18 mln handset users.
More than 60% of mobile Trojans are active on the Symbian platform. Qihoo 360's mobile security center found 1,591 Symbian Trojans affecting more than 12 mln handset users during the first half of this year.
The main vector of infection over the past six months was WAP/Web downloads, which accounted for 53% of infections. Other common vectors were infections through links in SMS and MMS messages, mobile forums, mobile software download sites, and mobile app stores.
