Baidu to Trial Fee-based Mobile Search Services

iFeng Tech, 6/29/11

Yue Guofeng, general manager of Chinese internet company Baidu's (Nasdaq: BIDU) mobile internet division, announced at the Baidu Mobile Box Computing Forum in Beijing yesterday that Baidu plans to test out a fee-based model in which users would be charged for mobile search services. Mobile internet users, explained Yue, are more accustomed to paying fees than traditional internet users.

Yue also said that mobile internet is better suited for search advertising, as in a mobile terminal the user holds both the ad medium and the communications device with which to respond to the ad; when a search query yields an ad containing a phone number, the user can simply click on the number to call, resulting in higher ad conversion rates.
