People Daily's Search Will Not Offer Paid Ranking
Sohu IT, 6/20/11
Liu Jun, chief scientist for People's Daily-operated Chinese search engine Jike.com (formerly: Goso.cn), has announced that future plans for the search engine do not include introduction of paid ranking of results. Liu said that as Jike currently has no pressure to become profitable, all search results on the site will continue to be arranged naturally based on machine calculation, and that Jike has no plans to sell rankings in its search results. Liu added that the decision to refrain from commercializing its search results was one made on principle, and that even in the future when Jike switches to a profit model, it will still keep advertising and search results clearly separated so as not to confuse users.
Liu further added that with regard to Jike's search operations, current efforts are now focused on maintaining technical capacity and that the time has not yet come to adopt a profit model.
