Rumor: Taobao Mall to Launch Pharmacy Channel
Sohu IT, 6/15/11
Hangzhou-based e-commerce site Taobao's B2C Taobao Mall is reportedly planning to launch a pharmaceutical channel, according to a screenshot recently leaked on the Internet. The channel is being launched in cooperation with five state-approved B2C pharmaceutical companies, including Shanghai-based Fumei Pharmaceuticals (Daoyao.com), Beijing-based Golden Elephant Medicine (Jxdyf.com), Hangzhou-based Jo Jo Drugstores, Jiangxi-based Kaixinren (360kxr.com), and Yunnan Baiyao (Yunnanbaiyao.com.cn). The Taobao Mall medicine channel currently lists several categories of non-prescription drugs.
An industry source said the channel will be announced next week.
According to official statistics, 35 firms were awarded a pharmaceuticals e-commerce license this year, but online sales still account for a negligible fraction of China's pharmaceuticals market.
B2C e-commerce website Yihaodian has a pharmaceuticals B2C platform, 111.com.cn, and it was recently reported that Beijing-based B2C e-commerce platform 360Buy has acquired a pharmaceuticals B2C website in preparation to enter the market.
