MIIT Announces April 2011 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its April 2011 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the month were as follows:
Telecom operating revenues were RMB 87.02 bln (USD 13.35 bln), bringing the cumulative year-to-date total to RMB 333.67 bln (USD 51.17 bln), up 11.3% over the same 4-month period of 2010. Core services accounted for RMB 308.36 bln (USD 47.29 bln) of the cumulative total, up 9.4% YoY.
Total telephone subscribers saw a net increase of 8.84 mln in April, with mobile subscribers growing by 10.12 mln to 900.39 mln, and fixed-line subscribers dropping by 1.28 mln to 291.45 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed-line and PHS, the PHS subscriber base declined by 1.06 mln subs to 24.76 mln, while traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscribers decreased by 223,000 to 266.69 mln. 5.67 mln new 3G subscribers were added in April to reach a total of 67.57 mln.
A total of 68.53 bln SMS messages were sent during the month of April, bringing the total for the first 4 months of 2011 to 284.64 bln, a 5.3% increase over the figure during the same period of 2010.
Broadband added 2.23 mln new registered users in April to reach a total of 135.92 mln. In contrast, dial-up lost another 23,000 users, lowering the total dial-up user base to 5.77mln.
