China Mobile to Simplify Package Plans
Netease Tech, 5/18/11
China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) deputy GM of marketing Lu Wenchang said that the company will soon begin overhauling its calling plan brands, beginning with GoTone, and eventually revising the Shenzhouxing (EasyOwn) and M-Zone brands in an an effort to create uniform tariffs for each brand nationwide. Lu said that having different subscription plans for each region of China has made calculation of charges complex, leaving many customers unable to understand the conditions of their plan and feeling they are being overcharged.
China Mobile announced on May 17 that it will consolidate and reduce GoTone calling rates for the entire country, and largely reduce the number of available service packages. The goal is to simplify the payment process for subscribers by unifying local, long-distance domestic and international roaming charges under one standard rate. The move will also include providing free incoming calls across the board, and reduce the minimum monthly fee from RMB 88 to RMB 58.
In addition, China Mobile will also make changes to the billing process beginning June 1, providing users in seven cities and provinces, including Tianjin, Guangdong, Jiangsu and Yunnan, with the option to receive their bill via e-mail or MMS.
