China Unicom Unveils "Internet Handset" Strategy
Sina Tech, 5/13/11
Yu Yingtao, GM of sales for China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH), revealed details of Unicom's "internet handset" strategy yesterday. Unicom defines an "internet handset" as a smartphone with the following features: a 3.5-inch or larger display, a 600GHz or faster CPU, supports multimedia, 3G, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. Yu said that Unicom has partnered with a number of handset manufacturers, including Huawei, ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) and Lenovo (0992.HK).
Zhang Zhongping, deputy GM of Unicom's wireless networking division, said that Unicom will substantially increase investment in Wi-Fi this year. In late December 2010, Unicom announced a WLAN promotion aimed at post-pay subscribers, which originally was set to run until March 31, 2011, but was then extended to August 31, 2011. Jiang Dajun, deputy GM of Unicom's marketing department, said that Unicom is considering charging for Wi-Fi access in the future, possibly bundled with other packages.
