China Telecom Opens Wi-Fi Network to Non-Subscribers

China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) yesterday released its E-Surfing prepaid broadband Wi-Fi service, available to both China Telecom and non-China Telecom customers. According to Zhang Xin, general manager of China Telecom's customer service department, after verifying possession of a particular handset, users can purchase E-Surfing Wi-Fi prepaid credit via online banking, online payment platform Alipay or China Telecom calling credit. Once the purchase has been made, users can sign up for a user ID and password for the service online or via SMS, allowing them to use E-Surfing Wi-Fi hotspots nationwide.
China Telecom currently has 300,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across China and plans to increase coverage to 700,000 hotspots by the end of this year, and to 1 mln hotspots in 2012.
Editor's Note: Netease also reported in a separate article that the service will come with six separate payment plan options: RMB 5 for 180 minutes of Wi-Fi service, valid for one day after time of purchase; RMB 10 for 360 minutes of Wi-Fi service, valid for one day; RMB 20 for 720 minutes of Wi-Fi service, valid for one month; RMB 30 for 1,200 minutes valid for one month; and RMB 50 for 2,400 minutes or RMB 100 for 6,000 minutes, both valid for three months.
