Sina Tech, 4/27/11

At the Global Mobile Internet Conference (GMIC) 2011 in Beijing today, Chinese internet company Sina's (Nasdaq: SINA) CEO Charles Chao said that the company plans to introduce advertising to the Sina Weibo microblogging platform this year.

Approximately 20 mln smartphones were shipped in China in 2010, according to Chao, who said that number could rise to more than 60 mln by 2012. Chao added that mobile internet users are expected to exceed PC-based internet users by 2013.

Chao went on to say that there were approximately 530 mln General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) mobile internet users in China, and excluding MMS users and extremely light users, China's mobile internet users exceeded 350 mln this month, reaching approximately 80% of the number of PC-based internet users.

Chao said that more than 50% of users accessed the Weibo microblogging platform via mobile terminals, particularly handsets, and that as of the end of February approximately 50 mln messages were posted daily.
