Sony, Wasu Partner on Internet TV

Southern Metropolitan News, 3/30/11

Hangzhou-based DTV and IPTV operator Wasu Digital Television Media Group signed a strategic agreement yesterday to provide content for Sony (China) internet TV products. Sony joins Samsung, LG, and Sharp as foreign-owned TV manufacturers that have signed deals with internet TV content license holders.

Wasu president Li Yiqing said that while domestically-produced internet TV sets can be used to watch online content, foreign brands had yet to be approved and China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) has yet to set a timetable.

According to a source close to SARFT, China's internet TV content service license holders have lobbied SARFT in the hopes that foreign-invested TV manufacturers will soon be subject to the same policy as domestic firms.
