China Mobile, Xinhua to Launch Search Engine This Month
Netease Tech, 2/18/11
Panguso.com, the national-level online and mobile search engine developed by China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) and Xinhua News Agency, is set to go online this month with a launch ceremony scheduled for February 22. Panguso.com is designed to provide information tailored to fit the lives of ordinary Chinese internet users, as well as accurate and comprehensive enterprise search services. The site will have desktop and mobile versions, allowing for a unified search experience across multiple devices.
Xinhua and China Mobile separately established workgroups in May 2010 to work on preparations for the search engine. On August 12, the two companies signed a strategic partnership framework agreement.
Editor's Note: Baidu's search cache for Panguso shows a search engine interface with tabs for news, web, image, video, SNS, music, and "editorial article" search. The page displays Beijing ICP number 11002313. Since the termination of its cooperation with Google in early 2010, China Mobile has reportedly relied on subsidiary Aspire for a self-developed search engine for on-deck search of China Mobile's Monternet WAP portal.
