China Unicom Launches Restricted 3G Service for 2G Users

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has launched a restricted 3G service for its 2G users in Anhui Province and Zhanjiang Prefecture in Guangdong Province. The service allows 2G users to directly use the 3G network, but the speed of the service has been limited to between 50 and 80 Kbps. Usage fees of the service are lower than regular 3G network fees, with users in Anhui being charged RMB 5 per month to use the service.
