Rumor: Qualcomm Promotes Low-End Smartphone Solutions in China
Netease Tech, 1/11/11
A source at an unnamed Shenzhen-based mobile handset OEM revealed today that Qualcomm is increasing efforts to promote its smartphone processors in China. Mainland Chinese "shanzhai" (i.e. knock-off) handset makers are currently testing production of smartphones using Qualcomm's solutions, and should begin releasing them to market around the Chinese New Year holiday early next month. The source said that Qualcomm has released four smartphone processors - the 7227, 7225, 7627, and 7625 - for the Chinese market, and has already partnered with handset makers including Huawei, ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ), and Lenovo (0992.HK). Qualcomm is now focusing on small and mid-sized Chinese OEMs, such as Simcom, Prowave, Shengyao, Newings, and Basewin, as the target for these solutions.
An industry source said that small and mid-sized OEMs were currently testing Qualcomm chips in low-end smartphones slated to be priced at around USD 100 and mid-range smartphones to be priced around USD 110.
