Rumor: Google Attends Online Mapping Service Standards Training
National Business Daily, 12/28/10
A representative of China's State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping (SBSM) recently announced that the final date for awarding online map service licenses will be extended until March 31, 2011, somewhat alleviating fears that Google will not have sufficient time to obtain a license. Microsoft's application for a license is currently being evaluated by the bureau, while Google has yet to register an application.
According to one senior manager at an already-licensed enterprise, Google sent a representative to attend the SBSM's second training session on online map service standards. No Google employees were present at the first training session. The manager said, "This is a positive sign that Google is still working hard to gain approval."
Kong Xiang, general manager of the business department of Sogou Maps, the Sogou search engine's online map service, has revealed that a number of enterprises that currently make use of Google's mapping related APIs have contacted Sogou and other developers out of fear that Google will not receive a license.
