China Business News, 12/22/10
At yesterday's press conference for Huawei Device's mobile internet strategy, Huawei Device CEO Kevin Tao said that Huawei had had revenues of USD 22.8 bln in 2009, and predicted total revenues of USD 27 bln this year. Terminal sales revenues will grow from USD 3.7 bln last year to a predicted USD 4.5 bln this year, Tao said, a growth of 30%. In the Japanese market alone, Huawei's terminal business accounted for revenues of between USD 2 to 3 bln. Tao predicted an additional 30-40% growth in Huawei's terminal business next year, with sales revenues to reach USD 10 bln to 15 bln within the next three to five years.
Tao predicted that mobile handsets would account for more than 50% of Huawei terminals, with smartphones accounting for a significant percentage of these.
As Huawei transitions from internet services to cloud computing and terminal services, Tao said, Huawei Device will play a bigger role within the company. A source inside Huawei said that the company had already begun internal discussions regarding Huawei terminal branding.
Huawei Device chief marketing officer Xu Xinquan explained to reporters that one of the major reasons Huawei will transition to a more cloud-oriented strategy is operators' ongoing transition to a non-operator procurement model.
