Shanghai Telecom to Phase Out PHS Services in 2011

Oriental Morning Post, 12/22/10

Shanghai Telecom said yesterday that it will begin to phase out PHS services as of January 1, 2011. Prepaid PHS subscribers will be able to upgrade to Shanghai Telecom's E-Surfing mobile subscription plans; their remaining prepaid balance will be transferred to the new accounts. Remaining balance can also be transferred to subscribers' other accounts, including telephone and broadband accounts. Subscribers who purchase a 3G handset at one of Shanghai Telecom's service centers will receive an RMB 100 subsidy, and will receive an RMB 200 subsidy if they switch to a "One Home" subscription package.

At the start of 2009, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) issued an official document requiring all wireless systems using the 1900-1920 MHz band (i.e. the PHS band) to phase out services completely by the end of 2011 in order to prevent interference with TD-SCDMA systems.
