China's Minister of Industry and Information Technology Steps Down

Li Yizhong, China's Minister of Industry and Information Technology, stepped down on December 9 to be replaced by deputy minister Miao Wei.

Li was appointed minister in charge of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in 2008. During his tenure Li saw the launch and subsequent backlash against Green Dam, the government's filtering software, and an increase in operational costs for small and mid-sized websites due to website registration requirements.

Editor's Note: Li, aged 65, may assume a post as a deputy director on the Finance and Economic Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
