China Mobile: OPhone OS to Adopt Android Standards
CCTIME, 12/16/10
The Open Mobile System (OMS) or OPhone mobile OS, which is based on the same OS kernel as Android but has been incompatible with standard Android applications and incapable of upgrades to the newest version of the Android kernel, will change to become a layer running on top of the standard Android OS, VP Wu Zijian of Borqs, the Beijing-based design house responsible for OMS, said recently. Wu said that the OS would simply add China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) services as applications to the stock Android OS, ensuring compatibility of mobile apps with other Android systems.
Users of the new OPhone 2.0 operating system will find themselves presented with the option of using the stock Android UI. Earlier versions of the operating system supported only China Mobile's custom OPhone user interface.
Users of OPhone 2.0 also report a great increase in Android software compatibility over previous versions, with basically all popular Android apps usable on the new platform. The China Mobile Research Institute (CMRI) has announced 100% software compatibility between OPhone and Android.
