Netease Updates Youdao Dictionary
Netease Tech, 12/14/10
Chinese internet company Netease's (Nasdaq: NTES) search engine Youdao announced the launch of version 4.0 beta of its Youdao Dictionary today. The new version of the English-Chinese dictionary features "real context" and "real voices," allowing users to hear and see the words they look up in a natural context.
The sample videos used in 4.0 beta of Youdao Dictionary come from a number of sources, including Netease's own Netease "Open Classroom" channel offerings, which feature video lectures from several hundred major international universities, as well as from Chinese video site Ku6.com's (Nasdaq: KUTV) library of videos and American television shows. Audio examples come from foreign radio recordings.
Based on the different registers and usages of words, the new version of the dictionary separates the English-Chinese entries into the categories of "colloquial," "literary," and "thesis." Nearly 200 fields of study, including physics, chemistry, mathematics, medicine, computing, and biology, are covered, with some 600,000 entries annotated according to field-specific usage.
Since version 1.0 of Youdao Dictionary was released in 2007, the software has been installed on more than 60 mln computers.
