Jiangsu Operators Begin Releasing Children's Handsets
DoNews, 12/14/10
Jiangsu Mobile has released handsets for children, while Jiangsu Telecom is conducting testing in preparation for commercial launch and Jiangsu Unicom is in the internal testing stage.
The handsets have a timer function that automatically shuts the phones off at certain times, such as during class hours. Testers have reported that the handsets only feature a few buttons for calling preset numbers, and do not have games, SMS or mobile internet functionality.
China's three mobile operators are currently testing functionality for children's handsets. A parent or guardian can remote track the handset, as well as activate the phone's microphone online or via SMS in order to monitor and hear the phone's surroundings.
An employee at Jiangsu Mobile said the tracking and monitoring features cost RMB 10 per month. A source at one of the operators said this type of handset will be priced at RMB 500 or less.
