Shanghai-based online game maker Yoyo confirmed today that fierce market competition this year meant that its service restructuring plans would involve employee layoffs.
Reports online said that Yoyo had announced a list of about 80 employees to be laid off last Friday, representing layoffs of as much as 20% of the company. The layoffs mainly targeted entry-level workers, and affected all of the game developer's projects; the most senior position to be terminated was at the managerial level. After the company announced the list of affected people last Friday, it began working to assemble severance packages.
Spokesperson Li Sijie said that layoffs "wouldn't be as high as 20% of the company," but declined to reveal specific figures. Other reports online said that Yoyo's browser game operations team had effectively all left the company; browser games manager Wang Lijun has joined competitor Uuzu as product director.
