China Unicom to Offer Bundled 'Wo' Family Packages

An industry source said recently that China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) is preparing to launch a Wo family service offering high-speed broadband and 3G services to bring fixed-line and mobile telephony, broadband, and value-added applications together in one family-oriented plan. The plan will launch in 10 selected cities in late December before a nationwide rollout, planned for March.
The plan offers a unified user account and unified billing; fixed-line and 2G mobile users will enjoy increased free local calls, and calls between all users on a single plan will be free. The plan also offers additional products, including a "communications manager," high-definition video, and video calling. When 3G users sign on to the plan, they will also be eligible for a free month of service, as well as free standard calls and discounted video calls between themselves and other users on their plan.
The plans comes in three different varieties:
- One broadband account, one fixed-line phone, and up to five 2G mobile phones
- One broadband account, one fixed-line phone, up to five 2G mobile phones, and up to three 3G mobile phones
- One of the above-mentioned plans, plus a wireless data card
