Baidu Launches Mobile Box Computing
Tencent Tech, 12/01/10
Chinese internet company Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) quietly launched a new mobile open computing platform (http://open.shouji.baidu.com) recently. The new platform will offer a mobile transcoding platform, wireless box computing (a mobile version of Baidu's Aladdin Search Open Platform), mobile reformatting services (smart detection of user agent and reformatting to deliver the best interface for the device), mobile user behavior analysis, open Baidu Mobile services, and open mapping for location-based services (LBS). The mobile transcoding service is already available with partial functionality.
Baidu's wireless box computing will offer services for independent WAP sites, wireless content providers, and application developers.
Baidu's mobile reformatting services will allow third-party sites to send user client information to Baidu's servers for on-the-fly reformatting of their pages. Baidu will detect users' browsers and redirect them intelligently to sub-pages of the site formatted for optimal display. If a mobile user inputs Baidu's own web address, for example, they will automatically be switched to the mobile version of Baidu.
