China Mobile Drafts 3-Step Plan for TD-LTE
CWW, 11/25/10
At the 2010 TD-SCDMA Network Innovation Symposium in Beijing today, Zhao Xusong, senior engineer at the China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) Group Design Institute, said that the operator will adopt a three-step plan for TD-LTE services.
In 2011, TD-LTE products released will comprise data cards and client-premises equipment (CPE); TD-LTE services will be focused mainly on high-speed wireless broadband service.
In 2012, multi-mode dual-standby TD-LTE mobile phones are expected to hit the market, along with other mobile data terminals. For these devices, China Mobile will offer both high-speed mobile internet services and traditional voice services, as well as broadband multimedia services.
In 2013, multi-mode, single-standby TD-LTE mobile phones will hit the market, for which China Mobile will offer VoIP telephony services.
Zhao predicted that large-scale rollout to the public of TD-LTE would take place in 2013. Based on the history of TD-SCDMA development, he predicted a three- to five-year period of testing and quality control before the technology reaches maturity.
